I am not a math pers...sigma is a statistical term. I am not a math person so I probably won't describe it perfectly, but a low sigma makes it more difficult for your rating to change for the better or for the worse. It has to do with how much confidence the rating system has in the rating with which it has provided you. Low sigma = more confidence... hight sigma = less confidence.
